I was recently sent a copy of Ekaterina Walter’s new book, Think Like Zuck: The Five Business Secrets of Facebook’s Improbably Brilliant CEO Mark Zuckerberg for review by the author. It was right up my alley! Ekaterina combined Facebook anecdotes, wisdom from Mark Zuckerberg and other successful businesses (such as Zappos), as well as insights into how Mark Zuckerberg amassed his empire and made Facebook a new cultural norm and way to communicate.
My favorite parts of the book were the quotes that summarized the 5 business principles, as well as the actual material from Mark Zuckerberg’s public communications and letters. A lot of the material resounded personally with me, as Bethaney and I have built The Social Robot from the ground up and are so passionate about what we do.
Here are some of my thoughts on my favorite quotes and words of wisdom from the book:
“Find that thing you are super passionate about.” -Mark Zuckerberg
I often believe that passion can be the deciding factor between a successful business or a bankrupt one. You should never start a business surrounding something you aren’t passionate about.
Passion + Action = Results
Putting your ideas into action, especially when they have emotion behind them, is what it takes to make things happen!
Great companies don’t just create great products, they create movements.
I definitely think love, energy, and enthusiasm are so contagious When you love the product or service, your customers will too. Take what you love most and promote it. Take what you love least and work on it.
Hire for attitude. Skills can be taught; passion can’t.
Another quote about passion. Almost any day of the week, I will hire the freelancer who loves writing and marketing but needs polishing over the Virtual Assistant who is in it for the money, and who really wants to focus on bookkeeping or research. Luckily for most business owners, passion can be easily seen in most people, making hiring your future company superstars a piece of cake.
“Done is better than perfect.” -A corporate Facebook mantra
This should be written on my forearm to remind me to hone in my perfectionist tendencies. I often re-do something over and over when oftentimes, my first already passed the bar. To me, true productivity comes from meeting or exceeding expectations in the time you have allotted. This is definitely a balancing act.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and it gave me a lot to think about. Whenever I read non-fiction, it is usually through audiobook or hardcopy format so I can mark it up. If you want to learn more from Ekaterina, check out her blog or Twitter.
