The popular ‘create your own social network’ service, Ning, recently announced that they will no longer be allowing users to set up free networks– their service will be for paid users only. The new CEO of Ning reports that 75% of Ning’s traffic comes from users accessing paid social networks, like the communities built for fans of LinkinPark and All-American Rejects.

For users that still want to create a free social network, a good alternative may be the beta site Grou.ps. Grou.ps has a lot of options for users that are looking for different types of social networks- they can create their own version of YouTube or simply use the service as a blog aggregator.

There is a paid version of Grou.ps, much like Ning, but the free version gives you 10gb of storage and the first 10gb of data transfer for free. After that, accounts are based on storage and data usage and are priced based on a credit system.

A few older articles from TechCrunch published in 2007 has a list of other websites that create social networks here and here. (Note: I haven’t checked the sites, so some may be out of service).

Does anyone else know of any other free social network creation services? If so, post them in the comments.
