There are many thoughts and myths about how to work social media for the best results. This is a short review of six different thoughts examples of incorrect misconceptions about this new industry.

With social media becoming so prevalent, many people are jumping on the bandwagon and expecting their business to explode. While you may find some success or an increase in business with the proper use of this media, you likely will not become a millionaire overnight.

Social media is free or cheap
Depending on what exactly you are using in your advertising campaign, there are formats that are free such as using YouTube, Ebay, Twitter or Blogger. But, to incorporate some of these into your business and to create a campaign using these, it will cost you money. It is easy to create these types of content, but to get people to find them; you will need to pay to advertise. You and your employees’ time spent utilizing these tools is also costing you money.

It is easy to get results
If you are just starting out, you may find it difficult to get results quickly. If you are already well established, then it will be easier to get what you are looking for. For instance, if you are trying to sell a product, if you already have several thousand followers, then you can likely sell a few items, but with only 20, you may have a much harder time.

You can do it all
Depending on your goals with social media, you will need to call in some experts to help you out. While you can do a lot of work yourself, the experts can help you figure out the best ways to get the results you want. (Editor note- Social Robot finder Kelsey Childress does this for clients!)

Being great will get you results
If you do not have followers, no one is going to know about something great you have done. Maybe you organized a huge fundraiser and helped your cause raise 20k. With only forty followers on your social media sites, people are not going to know about your accomplishments. You can promote yourself on other websites as well, but people overlook things quite often. Word of mouth is best.

You can’t measure results from social media
There are many tools out there that you can use to help you determine what methods are working for you. While these methods are out there, many people are not able to understand what they are telling you. If you do not understand them, they are fairly useless to you, so learning to understand them is an important task. Define your end goal and use the tools necessary to measure whether that goal is being met.

One social media site is all you need
With the abundance of social media websites that are out there now, you could spend entire days just visiting them all and posting. There are many applications and utilities out there now that will allow you to create content on one, and have it post to all the others. This being said, you may not want to use twenty different sites, as you should still be writing personal, original content. Stick to maybe half a dozen of the sites that you prefer.

Social media is still a relatively new method of business promotion. It is still growing, and people are still learning to use it effectively. One of the biggest things to remember is that social media is exactly that- social – and it is important that you interact for the best results.
