UPDATE: Thanks to this week’s side deal on Groupon, I was able to donate $200 to DonorsChoose.org! The Groupon basically allows you to purchase a gift certificate to DonorsChoose.org for 50% off. I bought a $100 coupon, which is what this campaign has earned, was able to double my money! However, in order for the Groupon to be active, 500 people must purchase gift certificates. So if you’re in the giving mood, join Groupon and make a purchase!
Thank you to everyone for your support!
Back around the holiday season I did a post for ‘Cans for Comments‘ for a local animal shelter. And now that I’ve stumbled about the online charity organization DonorsChoose, I feel like I need to do it again. DonorsChoose.org allows teachers from around the United States to post a list of things they need for a special project or classroom. They include a price list of what is needed and individuals can contribute or “pitch in” to raise enough money to fund the project.
I’ve already donated to a teach that wants to bring Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5 to her students, but I want to do more. That’s why, for every comment on The Social Robot between now and May 2010, I will donate $1 to a project on DonorsChoose.
So, as a recap:
Just as with December 2009’s ‘Cans for Comments’, comments can either be on this post or any other post on The Social Robot. Each person can only comment twice and it must be a substantial comment that makes sense and is relevant to the discussion (spam comments won’t count, trackbacks will). For each comment, I will donate $1 to a project on DonorsChoose.
Additionally- I will also donate another 50 cents for every person that tweets or shares this post (or any other TSR post) on Facebook. Please either email me a link to your tweet/fb post (via the contact tab on the left), add it at the end of your blog comment, or include @thesocialrobot in your tweet.
The commenting and sharing period is from April 21, 2010 to May 2010.
Please use the sharing tools to the left and at the bottom of this post to let everyone know about Cash for Comments and DonorsChoose!
Thanks to everyone who will participate and I’ll post an update once the commenting period is over.
Hey Kelsey – thanks so much for making us the beneficiary of your latest ‘C-word for Comments’ initiative. You rule.
And now you owe us a dollar. 😛
donorschoose.orgThis is a great idea! Thanks for contributing to DonorsChoose; it has changed my classroom by providing my kids with new and exciting books to read on a regular basis.
donorschoose.orgfacebook.comThanks for doing such a wonderful deed. Donors Choose has been a blessing to my class over the last few months. I currently have up several additional projects that I am hopping will be funded that my students next year will be able to benefit from. I am greatly appreciative of all of the work that Donors Choose has done/does for teachers such as myself and all of the wonderful donors out there like yourself.
Thanks for putting this out there. My wife is a teacher and has had several different projects funded by Donors Choose.
Thanks for supporting a wonderful website that allows students from all backgrounds to have experiences they may not have without donorschoose support. They have also blessed my students with books and materials to express their creativity.
Hey, I just wanted to write and support the donorschoose initiative. I intern for Millennium Promise and think this is such a great forum for getting people who want to help out together to really make a difference. Thank you to everyone for taking time out of you busy lives to care about the children in the not so fortunate districts.
Thanks for supporting such a wonderful cause. So far I have not been funded on any projects but a friend of mine that teaches with me has. This is such a wonderful organization that puts resources into the hands of children who desperatly need it!
Thanks so much for this. My classroom has been enriched with new materials that we might not have received if not for donorschoose. My classroom has been richly blessed. Thanks
Thank you so much for supporting DonorsChoose.org. This site has made a HUGE difference in how and what I teach. I teach in a high poverty school, 87% of students live at or below the poverty line. Needless to say, parents want their children to have an exceptional education, which as teachers, we try to provide any way we can. BUT when you go to the next city and every classroom has projectors, document cameras, and smartboards, anyone can see the inequality. With DonorsChoose.org, I’ve been able to have things in my classroom, that more affluent schools have been provided by a strong PTA. DonorsChoose, has made huge difference! Thank you again for supporting this wonderful organization! Our school has created a giving page, take a minute to check it out.
donorschoose.orgThank you for supporting DonorsChoose.org. My wife is a dedicated teacher, who takes the time to write projects and has gotten many funded. She is writing these projects at home on her time off. She works hard and with the recent budget cuts and fear of a salary cut, it seems she has to purchase things from her pocket all of the time. So, DonorsChoose helps her out. Thank you for supporting such a great site.
What a wonderful person. The children need these items so very much to advance their education. Thank you.
donorschoose.orgThis is a really nice idea and DonorsChoose is a great charity to support. DonorsChoose promotes the kind of grassroots effort that can really make a difference. Giving even small amounts can end up having a huge impact. Not only that, the donor really gets a feel for exactly how the money is being used and the impact it has. I know in my classroom, the impact has really been felt. It is too bad that teachers have to scramble for basic supply but it is great that so many people support our work. http://www.donorschoose.org/erodrigues
I’m a big fan of DonorsChoose, not just as a teacher, but as someone who loves helping others. My county is “high-poverty”, but we’ve been able to obtain books and technology to overcome many of our financial obstacles. My students have become so engaged in the projects that DC has enabled! I find it hard not to donate to other teachers’ projects, so recently I set up an automatic donation each month. Now I can make it a habit to indulge in giving. Thanks for promoting this very worthy cause!
My mom is a teacher. She gets so excited when she gets a donation to any of her projects, it doesn’t matter the amount. Thank you for supporting DonorsChoose.org.
Thanks for choosing donorschoose.org to help out this month:) My class truly appreciates any help we receive, thanks again.
donorschoose.orgMy daughter is a teacher. DonorsChoose has been great. She used to spend so much money out of pocket. Thank you for your support of donorschoose.org.
donorschoose.orgWhat a terrific idea! Thank you for providing this opportunity to donate and to increase awareness for this wonderful organization. DonorsChoose.org has been instrumental this year in helping my classroom involve parents in reading. Please feel free to check out my DonorsChoose page to see our current needs in my classroom: http://www.donorschoose.org/dawn.taylor. Thanks!
