How to stay secure onlineSo how does one stay secure online? With all of the cybery-hacks out there you need to take care of yourself and be safe.

Watch What You Say

Be responsible for what you are doing and saying online. You are part of an online community and you need to take other people and their privacy into account. be respectful of someone and what they are looking to do. Also by sending out hate messages you are opening yourself up to a wide world of pain. Everything comes back to you in the end.

Use Anti-Virus Software

You must use anti-virsus software on all your computers, for your own protection. If you don’t have it, then you need to do some research and find some protection. Even basic protection will do- Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus software you can download for PCs.

Be Careful When Opening Emails

When you get an email,if  it’s from a source that you are not sure of, then you should delete it. Many times you will have third party sources that get ahold of your email and send you phishing scams and other disastrous links that can lead to viruses on your computer. If you notice something not right or you have no idea who the sender is, just delete the email. Additionally, don’t go in and try to unsubscribe from the mailing list. That is what they want you to do.  Just mark it as spam.

File Sharing

Do not share your computer or your files with people you do not know. If you must share files, be sure to use a secure file transfer service.  This can help make sure that your confidential files don’t get into the wrong hands, causing a security breach in your company or identity theft in your personal life.

Being smart and using common sense can help ensure that you are staying safe online.  The bottom line is: if it doesn’t look right, don’t click on anything. Mark it as spam if you are using a mail service that allows you to do so. If not, just delete the email Some mail services also let you block email addresses, which might be a good idea.
