A client recently had me do some research on email open rates, as she was planning to introduce a new weekly newsletter to her mailing list. The stats I found were quite surprising, to say the least. Additionally, I also had a chance to review a study on when the best time is to publish your blog posts in order to attract the highest social media engagement, and those results surprised me as well.

When is the best time to send marketing emails?

When should you send out marketing emails or publish blog posts?Normally, I recommend scheduling emails for the AM on any day but Monday and Friday. However, after viewing these stats, I may have to change up my strategy!

  • Tuesdays have the highest open rate. [GetResponse]
  • Saturday also has a pretty high open rate. [Customer.io]
  • Highest open rate is between 12-6pm, because everyone sends email in the mornings, so people are overwhelmed. [MarketingSherpa]
  • Surprisingly, email open rates spike at night (presumably because after dinner/taking care of kids, people check email one more time) from 8pm-midnight: [VerticalResponse]

When is the best time to publish blog posts?

A recent TrackMaven study I covered for KoMarketing found that blog posts that are actually published on the weekends and evenings have higher social media engagement than those published during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

In your own experience, what dates and times bring about the highest open rate/social sharing for emails or blog posts?
